Hiking around Lake Selbu

In front of the house, the lake stretches as far as the eye can see; behind it, the hills of Strandfjellet begin right away. From a family stroll to a long day in the mountains, the region is yours to discover on foot from June to October.

Just above the house

A little over 2 km away as the crow flies, the lake Gråsjøen, easy to reach and rich in fish, is ideal for a family outing. A little higher up, the Svendalstjenna loop (about 8.6 km, 2 h 30 of walking, 280 m of ascent) circles a small lake known for its trout.

The roof of Malvik, facing the fjord

On the road from Selbustrand to Hommelvik, a car park at the highest point is the starting point for the summit of Malvik (625 m), near Baklifjellet: about 11 km there and back and 4 hours of walking, across a moorland plateau where Sami herders once gathered their reindeer, with views as far as the Trondheimsfjord. Further west, Jervfjellet (504 m) is climbed from Rolset, about twenty minutes away by car (9.6 km there and back, about 3 hours).

By the water: the Selbustien

In Mebonden, the village centre of Selbu on the opposite shore (half an hour by road), the Selbustien follows the river Nea and the lake along 8 km of easy path, all the way to Vikaengene beach.

Wide open spaces: the national park and Fongen

To the south-east lies Skarvan og Roltdalen National Park (441 km², established in 2004), dotted with cabins of the Norwegian Trekking Association, such as Prestøyhytta and Schulzhytta. Its summit, Fongen (1,441 m), the roof of Selbu, is a long day's climb: 16.6 km there and back, 5 h 30, a demanding trail, from June to October. Further away, two hours by road, the Sylan massif and Storsylen (1,762 m) mark the Swedish border.

Good to know

The right to roam (allemannsretten) lets you walk freely outside cultivated land and pick berries and mushrooms there. Fires in the forest are prohibited from 15 April to 15 September. From June to mid-October, Selbu also marks summits and walking destinations (“17 i Selbu”, “10 på topp”) that you check in with an app.

Set off well fed

Breakfast is served at the time that suits you, early if you are heading out on a hike. When you get back, the two terraces facing the lake are waiting for you.
